The 5G-PPP is a joint initiative between the European ICT industry and the European Commission, which began with the promise of €700 million in EU funding.

5GEx, standing for 5G Exchange, is among the first projects to come out of the European 5G-PPP (public-private partnership) expected to leverage around €3.5 billion of investment for the new generation of mobile communications set for widespread introduction from 2020.

Huawei and 16 European partners are working on the project to create 5G infrastructure and services spanning many countries by focusing on the development of multi-domain orchestration for software-defined infrastructure.

The company’s European Research Centre (Huawei ERC) will be contributing to the 5GEx architecture design and leading the design and development of the 5GEx multi-domain orchestrator prototype.

Infrastructure services will play a crucial role in making 5G a reality, as they are the foundation of all cloud and networking services.

5GEx aims to boost progress towards a European infrastructure service market integrating multiple operators and technologies offering fast and automated service provisioning, while also achieving economies of scale.

The specific target is to reduce the time to market of new pan-European 5G services from 90 days to a mere 90 minutes.

Huawei has also been selected as Technical Manager of the CONFIG project which will define the next generation of convergent network architecture.

The company is one of 14 other world-class partners seeking to conceive 5G convergent system concepts and intelligent connectivity solutions.

Focusing on Core Networks, and leveraging the consolidation of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) technologies, the CONFIG (COntrol Networks in FIve G) project targets the definition and design of a clean-slate 5G Control Plane, allowing the integration of heterogeneous access networks and the support of services and applications for next-generation devices.

The CONFIG project was developed during the preparation of the first phase of the 5G-PPP at Deutsche Telekom’s initiative and runs without EU funding.

The 5G-PPP is a joint initiative between the European ICT industry and the European Commission, which began with the promise of €700 million in EU funding.

Huawei has been at the forefront of this collaborative effort since the very beginning, and is now contributing its expertise and global resources to some of the most future-oriented projects being implemented under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme.

Huawei is also forging ahead with its other European 5G initiatives. The company is researching 5G technologies at Surrey University’s 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) in the UK and has launched a 5G Vertical Industry Accelerator (5G VIA) and testbed together with European partners in Munich, Germany.
