Imagine of a coin. When it stays intact, then it can show either heads or tails (0 or 1). When we flip the coin in the air, the coin stops showing only one of the two shapes and cycles between the two shapes, showing at the same time both of them. To make it simple, this is the quantum way of saving and processing the information in subatomic particles. 0 and 1 at the same time.

A recent update that did not make any special sense and probably only a few people noticed! A big and famous investment company in the United States replaced many of its managerial executives in the investments administration sector, with computers that use the so called artificial intelligence (AI).

Both complicated and technical process of studying and analyzing along with the one of decision making over the investment options and implementation of the relative transactions, are not anymore held by people, but they are run by a “smart” engine.

It is more surprising if someone think that the executives, that were replaced by computers, consisted the elite of human resources sector, having excellent knowledge and distinguished abilities.  Hence, today, I decided to escape from the dark and suffocating Greek politico -economic reality and write down something about the future, that maybe today sounds like science fiction, but it may be the future reality. As poets mention, «The shape of things to come».

So, the first future scenario is the one about artificial intelligence. The next one, that’s being strongly connected with the first one, but it is even more impressive, has to do with the potential creation of the so called quantum computers. This so called AI has taken its first steps, creating smart robots that replace humans in simple tasks, or in other more developed applications, like the one we mentioned above.

But, quantum computers are still at an experimental stage. However, if it comes true, then it is said that it is going to be a great revolution of knowledge and service sector. Today, after the Industrial Revolution, we live in the Digital Revolution. Next revolutions that may follow are very close and it will be inflamed by the AI and the quantum computers.

Today’s computers are based on the binary system that is composed of the so- called bits.  It is a system of recording and visualization of data, where every computing unit can take one possible shape, either 0 or 1.  This is why it is called binary. When it comes to quantum computers, today’s bits will be called qubits and they will be able to take at the same time both shapes of 0 and 1.

All these can be illogical for us. Even Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, has recently stated that through all the research projects of Microsoft, the only one he cannot understand is this of the quantum computers, exactly because of its complexity and expertisation it demands. The new generation of quantum computers will have much more abilities and speed than the today ones and it will bring a revolution in knowledge. From astrophysics and chemistry spectrum to biology, meteorology and pharmacy. There will be the possibility of designing new materials with a set of fixed characteristics and much bigger durability than today.

New medicines are going to be produced while new molecules and cells will be studied and composed. Some calculations that are impossible nowadays, due to the restrictions made by current computers, are going to take place easily and accordingly most theoretical and practical problems are going to be solved. Briefly, today’s computers will look like ancient abacus comparing to the new quantum ones.

It is also breathtaking the implementation of these computers in AI. Is the simulation of a brain, smarter than this one of a human’s, possible? And what are the consequences for? From now on, the discussion takes more metaphysical dimensions. However, history has taught us that the greatest power of man is the adaption in the environment, according to Darwin. But, the way that his life is going to change and its new characteristics are known only to God, as Socrates said. And this is really too close.

Children must be at the heart of debate on Europe’s future

Most people debating the future of Europe think in economic terms. But today we must think about how children in Europe are experiencing their childhood, as that will be the biggest determining factor of our future, writes Jana Hainsworth.
