The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST) participates to the International Museum Day 2018, under the theme “Hyperconnected museums: New approaches, new publics”, with a rich program of an exhibition, two performances and a cultural activity in collaboration with TEDxAthens, included in this year’s theme.

EMST inaugurates its new program “In - Out” which aims on presenting the work of small but active museums all around Greece through bi-directional activities. This program begins with a collaboration with the Municipal Institution “Costas Tsoclis Museum”, operating for the 8th year in the island of Tinos. In the framework of the International Museum Day 2018, a selection of artworks and documents of Costas Tsoclis are transferred to EMST, aiming to honor the founder of the Museum in Tinos and to remind the important breakthrough that brought to contemporary art with his “Living Painting”, a technique which he devised in the mid-80s by combining moving electronic image with painting on canvas.

Costas Tsoclis says about the exhibition:

“There are fratricidal works. And there are patricidal works. The former are those that throw the shadow of their brilliance onto the artist's other works, while the latter are those whose fame surpasses that of their creator. The few pieces I am exhibiting at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (which I thank for honouring the Costas Tsoclis Museum on Tinos, hosting it within the framework of the International Museum Day) belong to these categories. They are the children of large families that managed to distinguish themselves, thanks to their simplicity and immediacy. Pieces that need no explanations, in a word, pictorial works. Works - Events.”

Collaboration with ARC FOR DANCE FESTIVAL  ARC_hitects  May 19, 2018  Stylianos Tsatsos at 18.00  Ioannis Mandafounis at 21.00

EMST collaborates with the 10th International Festival of Contemporary Dance ARC FOR DANCE FESTIVAL and proposes for the International Museum Day two site-specific works of Stylianos Tsatsos (19.05 at 18.00) and Ioannis Mandafounis (19.05 at 21.00) under the title ARC_hitects. The artists explore the fluid boundaries between dance and performance, the interdependence of movement between artists and spectators, and the evolution of these movements in relation to the body of the museum itself in its actual and perceived (symbolic) dimensions.

The "International Festival of Contemporary Dance ARC FOR DANCE FESTIVAL" is realized within the context of the Operational Program "ATTICA 2014-2020" and is co-funded by the European Union (European Regional Development Fund) and national resources.

The inaugural collaboration between TEDxAthens and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST) introduces the exhibition Hyper Realities by Benjamin Von Wong.

On the occasion of his upcoming TEDxAthens talk on 2nd June 2018 at Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, visual artist and photographer Benjamin Von Wong presents a series of hyper-realistic photographs that focuses on the current social and environmental issues by creating images that aim to raise awareness and inspire the viewers.

He uses the power of this photographs and social media as a starting point for dialogue and reflection. The three topics presented in the exhibition are related to the environmental impact of the fashion industry, the disposal of electronic waste as well as the excessive use of plastic in everyday life. At the same time, through a series of videos he unveils the research, design process and special effects behind his photographs that people often mistake as to be a result of digital editing.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 19th May until 9th June 2018.

In the Alternative Stage of TEDxAthens on the 2nd of June 2018 the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST) will present the interactive art project Face Forward… into my home which begun in 2017 and was implemented by the Museum with the support of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and funded by the European Commission.

After the presentation of the project, a conversation with participants and exhibition contributors will take place.

On May 18 and 19, in the framework of the International Museum Day, the entrance at the activities and exhibitions of EMST will be free.
