Ireland And China Begin Top Level Trade Talks

The EU's new approach to trade with Asia is highlighted this week with Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Bertie Ahern heading up his country's biggest ever trade mission to China.

One third of the Irish cabinet is accompanying their Prime Minister on the trip to Beijing where they will meet the president and premier of China in Beijing.

Four Cabinet Ministers, as well as representatives of more than 200 Irish companies will attempt to negotiate stronger economic links with their hosts.

The itinerary during the six-day visit includes visits to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

The business delegation represents a wide range of sectors, including education, computer software, services, tourism, manufacturing and agribusiness.

Ireland's Enterprise, Trade & Employment Minister Micheal Martin said he expected a number of 'significant business contracts' to be completed over the course of the mission. Trade between Ireland and China is currently worth 4 Euro billion a year with a strong balance in China's favour.
