United Nations secretary-general envoy Maria Angela Holguin will be in Brussels on Wednesday for meetings seen as important to European Union preparations for a possible revival of Cyprus reunification talks ahead of an expected visit by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Cyprus next week.

During the brief visit, Holguin is scheduled to meet the EU’s new representative for Cyprus, European Commission Executive Vice President Raffaele Fitto, and advisers to the presidents of the European Commission and European Council.

The discussions are expected to help define EU positions and expectations should efforts to restart negotiations gain momentum. European diplomatic sources cited a series of recent contacts with Turkey and said Cyprus has become linked to broader EU-Turkey relations.

Officials in Brussels believe a new opening may be emerging, shaped by current geopolitical conditions and initiatives by key stakeholders. The EU is now awaiting the outcome of Guterres’ visit before preparing for any renewed talks on Cyprus.
