Greece, Denmark and European madness

The last months articles appeared in the international-especially German-press concerning the inefficiency of the Greek state in guarding its borders and preventing dangerous elements from moving from Greece to the rest of Europe

The reason this time was the rape and murder of a young German woman by an Afghan “refugee”. The culprit had been arrested and convicted in Greece earlier for attempting a similar crime but was freed before completing his sentence. After he was freed he fled Greece ending up in Germany  where he committed his heinous crime. German officials were quick to blame the Greeks for among other things ,not issuing an international arrest warrant after they realized that the Afghan had fled the country. On their part the Greek authorities argued that they had complied with international legal requirements.

It was not the first time that  criticism has been directed at the Greek authorities for their shortcomings in identifying and stopping terrorists before they move on to Europe. So what happened with the fleeing of the Afghan immigrant is hardly surprising.

What however is surprising are the latest news coming from Denmark, a country which is generally considered as being extremely efficient and “progressive” in dealing with various social problems.

According to local media reports the Danish state had been providing social benefits (unemployment benefits etc) to terrorists who had left Denmark and were fighting in Syria on the side of ISIS! According to the media reports 36 persons had left Denmark to go to Syria to fight with ISIS. While being there they kept receiving social benefits from Denmark.Of course one does not know whether the Danish funds were used to sustain the jihadists only while they were fighting in Syria or also for engaging in similar activities elsewhere in the world.

This information was first unearthed by the Danish intelligence services which passed them on to the relevant authorities. “This must stop immediately” the minister for employment Troels Lund Poulsen declared upon learning the news.”It is unacceptable that social fund should be misused for such purposes”.

The cases of Greece and Denmark present a nice symmetry. On the one hand you have a bankrupt nearly absent  state unable to effectively identify and control the whereabouts of dangerous jihadi elements.

In the case of Denmark you have the exact opposite: The over-presence of an all-powerful paternalistic  state which through  its “social  policies” ends up in funding terrorism.

Irrespective of how you look at it one thing is certain: The Brits must be crossing themselves for having left behind this “European” madness.
