TAV Airports Holding: A Success Story
TAV Airports Holding: A Success Story

TAV's history dates back to 1997, the official call for tenders for the Istanbul Ataturk Airport International Terminal Building. TAV Airports Holding was established as a joint venture Between the Tepe and Akfen Groups, the winning bidders for the contract. Istanbul Ataturk Airport is among the very first examples of the "Build-Operate-Transfer" airport operations projects in the world. This project, reflecting the contemporary image of Turkey, has also come to be the first concrete step of TAV's success story.

Growing into a huge success story in a relatively short time, TAV has achieved a position of a global brand name not only in airport construction projects, but in airport operations - a brand new field, no less – with its considerable know how, high quality human resources and its advanced technology.

TAV, as a part of a planned process, reorganized its organizational structure in 2006, and gathered all of its "operations" activities under the TAV Airports Holding (TAV Airports) and the "construction" activities under TAV Construction divisions. Following this reorganization, TAV Airports Holding was presented for initial public offering in February 2007. The company continues to build on its success every year and strive to represent Turkey in the best manner possible in the International arena.

Additionally, TAV holds the option to operate the Antalya Gazipasa Airport in Turkey, Enfidha Zine El Abidine Ben Ali International Airport in Tunisia and Alexander the Great International Airport in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, in addition to the St. Paul the Apostle International Airport in Ohrid. TAV Airports also retains the option to the right to operate the new Cargo Airport it has undertaken to construct in Shtip, Macedonia.

TAV Airports also actively participates in other areas of airport operations, such as ground and management services, duty free retail stores, food and beverage services, data processing and security. TAV Airports Holding provides services to approximately 370.000 flights by 300 Airline Companies and an average number of 41 million passengers every year.

The majority – 67 per cent - of the consolidated revenues of TAV Airports are in fact non aviation related. The largest revenue contributor is ATU, the Free Shop operator, where TAV Airports has a 50 per cent share. According to financial statements prepared in accordance to IFRS, TAV has generated a turnover of 508 million Euros in 2007. The company shares are listed in the Istanbul Stock Exchange as “TAVHL” since February 23, 2007.

Where Romania can build excellence: the sources of future competitiveness

Romania has been, for most of its recent history, a story of potential deferred. The standard account of Romanian competitiveness, to the extent one exists in international business literature, is a cost story: cheap labor, low corporate taxes, a large domestic market for Central and Eastern European standards.
