The European Commission adopted a favourable opinion on the accession to the European Union of Bulgaria and Romania. This decision follows the successful conclusion of the accession negotiations by the European Council meeting in Brussels last December and the finalisation of the Treaty of Accession in February this year.
There is no doubt that the two countries will become full members of the EU in two years' time, bringing the total number of the member states to 27. By that time the Union would have the experience of working with 25 members and the addition of two more will present no problems at all. The EU already passed the test of the US president's official visit to Brussels and showed every body that it can function smoothly in like cases.
President George W. Bush found a Union that worked properly with no duplications in duties or in discussions and the 25 leaders - even when all of them were together nobody got in the other guy's feet.
Of course this was a fortunate occasion for the EU to show that it was one entity. Britain was in line with the continent on the Iran and Syria issues; the most important items in the current EU-US agenda. So it was a fortunate occasion for the European Union to show the Americans that the Union is still growing without becoming overcrowded and with no problems. To welcome Bush in Brussels the European side comprised the leaders of Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Turkey. If this is not an empire, then the term has lost its meaning. At least the meaning it can have in our modern times.
The road to the EU for Romania and Bulgaria is already paved and there are no obstacles that can reverse it. This is an infallible sign that the Union works.
