The European Commission has invited the Syrian interim government to a donors’ conference just a few days after the army, affiliated with the Islamist terror group Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), killed thousands of ethnic and religious minority civilians

Massacres have not deterred the European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, from continuing to provide financial and political support to the new Syrian government. Links with extremist groups are not questioned.

The conference, ‘Supporting Syria: meeting the needs for a successful transition’, is intended to promote investment in the country in an attempt to serve strategic goals. The new Syrian government will officially participate, foreign minister Assad al-Shibani will represent Damascus.

The official statement from the European Council said: ‘The EU is  deeply shocked by the violence in the coastal region of Syria in recent days , which has resulted in countless casualties  including many civilians’. No mention of HTS and the militia responsible for the massacre. A statement by the European External Action Service (EEAS) did not even mention the massacre.

It looks like Assad’s regime has been replaced by a radical Islamist regime. The whole world is watching the new Syrian government committing mass murders.

But Brussels turns a blind eye and continues to send money. This week, the interim government in Damascus may receive yet another round of funding, worth  millions of Euros, to safeguard  European interests in the region.

Where Romania can build excellence: the sources of future competitiveness

Romania has been, for most of its recent history, a story of potential deferred. The standard account of Romanian competitiveness, to the extent one exists in international business literature, is a cost story: cheap labor, low corporate taxes, a large domestic market for Central and Eastern European standards.
